This week in Oneonta there was a major backup in the sewer lines causing thousands of dollars in damage to multiple homes. Several feet of sewer waste entered the basements of these homeowners ruining their contents that were stored as well as causing significant physical damage to finished living areas.
This type of loss occurs so often, it is the top property claim taken by insurance companies. One of our agents and owners Vince Foti was on the scene on Sunday assisting our policy holders. The adjuster from Travelers Insurance Company was also present and indicated that 80% of the claims he tends to are for water and sewer back up. This figure includes losses caused by fire and auto claims.
Even if you do not have a finished basement you may still want to consider this type of coverage. The clean up alone can be costly. I am attaching a link to an article I found on the NYCM website. It contains some great information.
