Do you need flood insurance?

According to Federal Emergency Management Agency, flooding causes billions of dollars in property damage each year in the United States.

But standard homeowners insurance does not cover flood losses. Here are some tips and ideas that may help you decide if you need flood insurance.
  • You must to live in a community that participates in the National Flood Insurance Program.  Contact your local agent to see if you live in one of those communities.
  • Ask your agent if you live in a floodplain. You may also check online at www.floodsmart.gov and select "What's your flood risk?" Just enter your home address and you will know if you live in a low, moderate or a high risk area.
  • Policies take 30 days to become effective.  Do not wait to purchase coverage till you have a flood alert.
  • Be sure to discuss your options with your agent before making a final decision.
